I know this is a shot in the dark, but if you're using Microsoft Outlook (and I think Mozilla Thunderbird should be able to as well), you can create a 'rule' that if you receive an email with specific words in the subject it can forward the email immediately to your mobile phone. (Of course you would need to keep your email application open all the time.) :)
I'd bet that once osTicket gets further into it's development someone will come up with a better idea of how to receive tickets in real-time. (such as RSS feeds?)

It would be nice to add SMS gateway capabilities, but that would be an overkill. I am thinking of adding SMS email to staff profile to allow for real time alerts as an option.

Ooo... That would be neat. Get text message alerts on a cell phone? Brilliant!
Maybe a little overkill, but still pretty cool...

Hmmm good idea.
i'll try to wok some thing out ;)
wouldn't be too hard to implement.
for small business or privat users nice feature.
but i myself won't use it ;)
we get 500 mails and more a day ...
Guys, please tell me gateways u're working with ?
using our own, non public, seems to work so far.
so please tell me public ones (prepaid as well as postpaid)

For people with more than a few incoming tickets, then there could be a toggle option to only receive SMS with a status report. Example:
"You have 125 open tickets. Oldest ticket is 5 hours. Newest ticket received 5 minutes ago."
That's just an example. But could be useful if you are away and want to know if your staff is handling the tickets okay or if you need to hurry back to the office.

Hi isaBERLIN
I'm using ecall (http://www.ecall.ch/index_en.htm).
It is a prepaid service and has an email gateway (http://hilfe.ecall.ch/schnittstellen_email.html?&L=1) so it would be very easy to use the service with osTicket.
It even provides the possibility to send the answered SMS back to an email address (http://hilfe.ecall.ch/befehle_answer.html?&L=1) so that you could answer the ticket by SMS.

I was looking at getting something that would text my cell phone after hours. How difficult would that be to implement into the osticket?

The e-mailaddress I use is an IMAP box (if you don't have this at your server, you could use GMAIL, which offers IMAP connection). I get instant popups from thunderbird when new message arrive. The same goes for flexmail, which is connecting to the IMAP box as well on my mobile phone.
