I'm curious to find out what is the scenario where you would use the private department. Is it so your customers only know the main customer service email?

When a department is private the user/client will not see it. A ticket in a private department is shown to be in default dept. from clients point of view.
That said, it will probably go away in the near future. In the old days, before help topics, departments were part of open form making it vital to have public/private departments.

Thanks Peter, I wasn't sure. I really like the features of Osticket and want to make sure I take advantage of everything it has to offer.
Best Regards!
Peter according to your statement that private departments will not be shown to non members.....unfortunately its not the case here. If i login with a user who is not a member of private deparment can see department at the time of making new ticket...if he tries to create ticket it will be created but user will get Access Denied message....According to you team member replies...user will be denied to see status of ticket....ticket status will not be shown in his account.
But why ticket was generated in private department???? Please guide me...

user/client is not the same thing as staff member. I've already responded to your question about access permission. See http://osticket.com/forums/project.php?issueid=33
